SKYWATCH FRIDAY – Fermi II (Lake Erie)

This photo (click to enlarge) was taken from the Erie north shore, looking across to the twin towers of the Fermi II nuclear power plant. Fermi II is located about halfway between Detroit, Michigan and Toledo, Ohio, in the city of Monroe (Frenchtown Charter Township) Michigan. The view constantly changes with the light and weather. Sometimes white feathery plumes, several times the height of these, arise. I would like to think of them as beautiful, but somehow I’m never quite able to.

Oh, I didn't know you had a nuclear plant so close to you. Does that mean it's also very close to Pt. Pelee?

Happy Sky Watch!

Hmmm, I echo your thoughts on that plant. Still it makes for a very interesting shot.

That is a great photo. The clouds and the water look almost like a mirror image. Really nice photo.

You almost cannot tell where sky and water meet...the horizon could almost be the cloud.

It is a beautiful photo, but I agree about the plant -- hate to see them. I took a speed boat trip up the Columbia River to Astoria a couple of years ago and it was gorgeous, except for one big nuclear plant and there was just something ominous about it. Once past it, you could believe that the scenery hadn't changed since Lewis and Clark traveled that way. So much difference in such a short distance.

Looks like a cloud is dancing over there on the horizan. I understand your conflict. Nuclear power can save our skies but kill the earth. I honestly don't know what to think myself.

Don't get me started on nuclear power. Arrrgh!!

But it a good shot of a great sky, as usual

Yes, I agree about the plant.

But look at that photo - layers of color. Rather wonderful.

Hard to see the difference between the sky and the water - if it weren't for that little bit of land. So cool.

I suppose it much be diffcult to really enjoy a view with a nuclear plant in the distance.... but at least you try and that say a lot..

Great photo of Lake Erie! Yes, the Gulf of Mexico is the same way ... it's constantly changing. Just focus on the clouds and the illumination. Block out the plant!

For someone seeking balance, this is exceptionally perfect!

I immediately thought of W.O. Mitchell when looking at your photo. Something of the bare essentials of horizon and sky that reminded me of how he described the Saskatchewan prairie.

It sure is an eerie photo!

I've not yet been to the north shore of the lake, and had no idea that plant was there.

Despite your feelings about the plant, the photo itself is very interesting and makes an unusual skywatch.

the line of light across the horizon is amazing.

This is remarkable and beautiful. It is as if the clouds and the lake are in a conversation. The power plant is an eerie thing. Perhaps the clouds and water are wondering, "What will we do with that thing?"
