SKYWATCH FRIDAY - Pieces of the Sky (Lake Erie)

The clouds in this sunset were in just the right place to split the image of the sun into several pieces. The sun isn’t actually as large as it would be if you removed the clouds and “completed” the circle - and I don’t know enough about meteorology to say what this effect is called, but it reminded me of some lyrics in an old Emmylou Harris song – “pieces of the sky.’ It’s a beautiful song, if they had it on YouTube, I’d embed it here, but if you want to track it down, the album it’s on is also titled Pieces of the Sky, and the song is “Before Believing.”

I don't think I've ever heard Piece of the Sky but that is a beautiful shot of the sky.

I don't know about the song, but I will tell you that effect is similar to that we see during the summer solstice where the moon looks HUGE on the horizon... all illusion. Here is a link to my blog where I talked about that... link.

You've captured the effect of the "broken sun" beautifully.

The clouds also seems to blend where the water ends and the sky begins. Wonderful shot!

The sun seems to be in a rush to go to bed. Love the droopy tree.

Gosh... this is pretty. Sometimes if you look at it long enough.. you can see the water moving... it's so realistic... beautiful.

I have seen many Lake Huron sunsets, but none on Lake Erie. Very beautiful indeed!

Interesting analysis of that sunset. Sunsets are poetry in motion ... like a good Emmylou song!

Some day I'm going to stand on this side of the lake and wave, just to see if I turn up in your photos. :)
