SKYWATCH FRIDAY – GEESE AND GULL AT TWILIGHT (Lake Erie)

One evening after the sun had set and the darkness was closing in fast, I noticed a high altitude jet trail catching the last of the light. I started to take some shots when I noticed a flock of geese crossing the sky, and waited with my camera until they were silhouetted against the trail. When I went to crop the photos, I discovered I’d caught a soaring gull, too.

Of all the many weather moods and cloud formations I see here on the lake, I think these near-abstractions are the ones I like best. They remind me a little of paintings by two of my favorite artists, Mark Rothko, and Canada's Otto Rogers. Rogers’ works are especially organic earth-and-sky looking.

Great shots. I love sky shots and of course anything outdoors.

Nice captures...I really need to get out and get some new photos for sky watch. Just feel like I haven't had anything new to offer in a while.

fun photos, we have lots of geese, ducks etc that migrate through our area twice a year. We also have many residents called snow birds who come and live here during the winters and avoid the snow up north.

Such photos inspire to paint too! Lovely shots!

Both great shots. I wish the one of the geese would enlarge, but it didn't for me.

Really nice photo, Deborah. They really look artistic, almost painted. You are such a good photographer!

In Norway we have a lot of snow these days. I assure you: the snow comes horizontal because of all the wind and I hate it and love it at the same time. How ambivalent am I? Anyway - summer is my favorite season. No doubt about that ;-)

Your photo with the geese crossing the jet stream remind me somewhat of my photo of Snowgeese crossing my westerly path along highway #20 a couple of weeks ago. Both photos showing evidence of man made intrusions within their flight paths.

The geese look rather fragile as they mingle with the jet stream. A beautiful skywatch composition.

What incredible shots!! I wish I could have signed up today, but when I went to Sky Watch, there was just the new rules, but no list of people/blogs and no place to sign up. I clicked on your Sky Watch link and it's what I found when I went there. Still no place to add your info?????

Deborah: It's always nice to get some birds to add shapes in your sky.

I'm going to try to do the sky watch next week. I'm also now aware of Watery Wednesday ... although I'm not sure if I want to commit to both. Nicely done.

Deborah, you were ready just at the right time. I think you may keep the camera very handy like I do mine. Even when I'm driving it is in a cup holder.
Thank you for peeking in, I liked looking at the fog and dew too.
Happy SkyWatching!

What fun to discover the aerial posers as you were cropping the photos! Your post reminded me of the fun of actually picking up pictures from a shop and seeing what I "got." That's really delightful. I love the copper color of the skies here.

Very nice shots and great timing too...

Thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting. I don't know of any U.P. blogs, but this guy often has some beautiful U.P. and Lake Superior photography. http://www-personal.umich.edu/~jensenl/visuals/album/

I live about an hour south of the bridge (they call us trolls since we live "under" the bridge) The U.P. is my favorite quick getaway, so I make at least a couple of trips up there every year.

I always enjoy finding a surprise in my photos when I look closer. It's like a present even when it's not your birthday.

these are great - I really like the way you use the jet trail as a background for the flying birds

I am missing the honking of geese right now and it is what made me so nostalgic, and inspired part of my most recent post. This is a lovely and haunting autumn sky. The Cloud Messenger must have been listening!
