HELP – I’M FROZEN AND I CAN’T GET UP!!!

Dateline, Sunday January 18th Mount Clemens, MI

Sounding like the set up for a goofy joke, or maybe a Far Side cartoon: The Macomb Country Sheriff’s Department has reported their divers have freed a goose that sat too long in a the chilly Clinton River in a Detroit suburb, and got stuck. The goose (presumably a Canada goose) was reported Friday, frozen solid into the ice. How embarrassing! The divers and a marine officer first tried pouring warm water around the bird, but no luck. Next they resorted to chipping away at the ice, and, after an hour, managed to get the bird loose. It was further reported that the newly-freed bird honked, and then waddled off to join some other geese in nearby open water. One can only imagine the razing it got upon its return.

What a hoot! Can you believe that??? Great photo, too. I bet he took a lot of razzing from fellow geese! Thanks for the big chuckle -- I'm sorry, Goose, at your expense!

How funny, Deb... I cannot imagine how he could have allowed that to happen.. Guess he went to sleep--and then just gradually started sticking to the water. Can you just imagine???? It is funny to think about--poor thing. Yipes!!!!

Cute post, Deb...

OMG, too too funny. Poor goose, who will hear about this from the rest of the flock for YEARS.

A group I was with were watching the geese and ducks on a mostly frozen river in front of the house we were staying at this weekend, talking about 'how do they not get frozen onto the ice'. Well, there you go. They DO!

Thanks for the post and the photo!

that's funny-i wondered if it was a person at first glad it was only a duck/goose in that predicament.

Aaack! Thst's sad... very, verrry funny, but sad. Poor lil guy had no clue how he got himself in that predicament and how he was going to get out of it.

Glad this tale had a happy (albeit frozen) ENDing.

Funny and sad story! Thank goodness he was noticed and could be freed! But you would think a bird like this would have some instincts that kick in and say "I may freeze if I stay!"

I have seen that happen here, too. But it didn't end so well.

What a goose! I'm always amazed at how people rescue animals, all the thought and gear they used to free the goose.

Amazing stories of birds and animals we get to hear! Makes life more interesting.

Nice to see a happy ending. That must have been a quick freeze!

We have a section of Nyack called "Goosetown" (The original name of the area.) The geese caused much controversy (Kim Basinger came to town to speak out for the geese at one point.) Every year they have a Goose celebration.
