SKYWATCH FRIDAY – Suncatcher Tree (Lake Erie)

This is one of the two red maples in my backyard by the breakwall. I like the way the branches on the left seem to have caught the sun, and are holding it’s light from the rest of the sky. Of course that didn’t really stay that way - the sun moved steadily to the other side of the tree, and the whole sky went from citrine to crimson to dusky purple.

Even though I've been giving winter a hard time on this blog lately, one of my favorite poems is most definitely in praise of the season. To me, it expresses the love felt by a true specialist in melancholy.

Fall, leaves, fall; die, flowers, away;
Lengthen night and shorten day;
Every leaf speaks bliss to me
Fluttering from the autumn tree.

I shall smile when wreaths of snow
Blossom where the rose should grow;
I shall sing when night's decay
Ushers in a drearier day.

Emily Jane Brontë

What a lovely thing to see when you look out your window. The branches do indeed seem to be cradling the sun and holding the rays a little longer for your enjoyment.

That is a melancholy poem. I don't think I've ever thought to sing when a drearier day is ushered in. I'll cerebrate on it a while.

Hi there..lovely pictures and poem you shoveled up-ha
Your discription captures the true essence of the maples set against the backdrop of winter- in your yard!
I'm in the tropics but it's been a bit cold (nights mostly). We're babies though. We've been having snow on Mauna Kea (Big Island).

My attention fell to the branches on the left also but I saw them reaching out to the other tree out of sight except for its branches that appear to touch the other.
And the poem is wonderful. I am reminded of the verse (forgot exactly where) that says "This is the day the Lord hath made. I will rejoice and be glad in it".

There seems to be no houses nearby. It is a beautiful view with no obstacles in the range.

Hi Deborah, I take it you are taking Emily's advice now and have started smiling over that snow.
All that snow! Ooooh, ooooh my.

But then your sky is pretty. Brrrr, it makes me cold just looking at it.

Happy SkyWatching. I'm up, finally. Nice and warm beach scene there, just for you.
