WALKING OUT AT NIGHT

Since there are no streetlights along my road, on this cold clear early January night the only illumination comes from my single string of Christmas lights and the twinkling stars. This is one of my favorite months of the year to stargaze, with three of my most-loved constellations clearly visible – Orion the Hunter, followed by the faithful dog star, Sirius, the Great Bear, and the ancient queen, Cassiopeia.

As the three old friend s rise over the empty fields across the road, behind me the crescent moon bends low to shine a few pale rays on the frozen lake. The silence is almost absolute, only the occasional snap of the ice pack shifting or a leftover autumn leaf rustling on the crust on snow.

Your words create a picture, a feeling, that is better than any camera -- and I love my camera, but I could feel the silence. Thank you for the peaceful moment.

A photo very fitting for early January. I have heard that winter is the best time to star gaze. I just can't get out there at night though because I am a whimp w/ the cold. HA!

It sounds so lovely.
And your string of lights is lovely too.

when I first moved here from NYC the silence at night was wondrous to me! I would stand in my yard and just listen

and real darkness was hard to get used to - it's never really dark in the city

I love the way your lights look - a warm glow

Oh, to be embraced by such silence.
Such a brief, beautiful description and so full of meaning.
