For quite some time now, the surface of the lake has been frozen for as far out as I can see, but it’s taken the recent deep cold to make it thick enough for some ice fishers to venture out. The first photo is of the new winter “landscape” of the lake, with a white “rivers” of wind-driven loose snow flowing towards the shore. Down below, in the second photo, the liquid water and the fish still move at will.

Then again, imagine the fish.
It is so neat to see the lake frozen like that. I would have no desire to ice fish, but it would be interesting to walk around the lake while being that solid.

Hi Deborah! Beautiful photos, but oh so cold. As much as I love cold weather, you would be hard pressed to find me on a frozen lake ice fishing, freezing my bum off. Not my idea of fun recreation. Lisa

Your pictures shows that cold can be beautiful! A landscape covered with snow is so quiet and peaceful - even when it's freezing!

I don't know how they know when it's safe. Last spring I saw a bunch of them out there on ice that had water on top and looked pretty "rotten". I kept watching them, thinking, if I see someone suddenly sink, I'm calling 9-1-1!!

Thinking of the life under the ice in the lake reminds me of reading The Immense Journey in college. (Loren Eisley essays) There is one about a fish... well, you may have read it. But if not I think you'd like it. I haven't thought about him in ages and ages.
My father was a fisherman--all types spear, ice, angling, fly... you name it. ice fishing made him seem extra rugged to me.
Ice fishermen...I don't understand. Every time I look at your Erie photos I have to remind myself it is a lake and not a sea!

Deb, I heard that Lake Erie is completely frozen over; have you heard this too? These photos are causing me to go in hunt of my wool sweater.
