After two consecutive days of warmer temperatures and steady downpour, at times torrential, the wind returned in the night. I pulled the duvet up under my chin and listened in the dark as it pounded my house with its fists, and lashed the rain against the window. I slept fitfully, wondering what the wind would do to the weakened ice, and what I would see in the morning. I've heard in times past that the fierce Lake Erie winds have actually pushed ice ashore, and damaged buildings that were set too close to the lake.
This morning, two mountains of piled-up ice, one of them easily two stories tall, sat a safe distance from my part of the shore. The color in the old ice made it look as if the rain had washed the watercolor blue right out of the painted sky, leaving only gray behind, but it's really caused by the filtering of light. That blue ice is so cool. Especially contrasted againt the gray on the ground and sky.
I made the picture larger and it is amazing how big the ice is. It is colored like a glacier. Nice pictures.
wow that blue color is impressive...i think i would have a hard time sleeping too at night wondering what the wind would do...glad you're okay.
Deb---Beautiful pictures of the ice.. Sorry you had such a torrential storm. We had a storm yesterday too--but luckily, it didn't last long. Our high winds is another story though. There are sticks and twigs and limbs all over the yard. Work to be done!!!!

A blah solid grey day here (blustery too) after some fake spring, so I will have to drag myself outside for a stroll rather than rush outside to partake...ya know?

It looks as if the waves have been frozen in time.
It was a fitful night around here last night too. I didn't think the rain would ever stop pummeling our steel roof!

I've never seen anything like it - guess why that paint chip is called "ice blue." Too cool.

Those really need to be enlarged to see the coolness of the ice.
Even with the rain and thaw, that looks downright cold ... and foreboding. Can spring actually be just weeks away!!! (That's a theoretical question for a Floridian!)

That wind can be so scary, can't it? We had some deaths in NJ from it on Thursday. I'm thinking how awe inspiring it must be to live near a great body of water like Lake Erie... a constant reminder of the power of nature.

When you mentioned the ice coming up on the shore, I was thinking of that same incident Mary mentioned, also something I hadn't heard of before and completely scary.
