SKYWATCH FRIDAY – Slip Sliding Away (Lake Erie)

The sun had not shone all day, but stayed hidden behind a layer of heavy cloud, offering only shower after shower of rain. Finally, it put in a brief appearance above the horizon, just in time to set. I’m not sure if this qualifies as atmospheric lensing or not, perhaps someone SWFer can elaborate on it, but for a moment the sun did appear more like a deck of suns, being shuffled down towards the horizon. Another even more spectacular sunlight distortion (of debatable cause) was posted recently on the astronomy Picture of the Day website, click HERE.

Well, when it finally appeared, it did a spectacular job, didn't it? This is a beautiful picture!

Glad you finally got to see it...

It's almost like a pillar effect. The light stacks and distorts on all the "dirty air". Spectacular the way it seems to be crawling toward the shore.

with clouds, no two sunsets are the same. We have NO clouds here and no rain.

Yes, why does the sun come out just in time to set?
And, why do get storms around 4 pm in the summer?

That was a strange shot you sent me to, but I know a person can see some odd things on the water. We once watched what appeared to be an island hovering over the water out in the bay. No camera, of course.

That's quite a view. Funny how the sun shows up for the curtain call after missing the entire show! Love it, though.

All I know is that I want to dive into that water and follow the light path to the sun.

This is such a quintessential dreamy, rainy day photo. Great job on capturing a really neat moment. for I bet it only lasted an instant.
