It was not the fluffy “liar snow” I wrote about recently, but wet, wind-driven pellets that left everything in its path coated with ragged ice. Once the storm broke, I decided to go out with my camera and go anywhere as long as I was outside.
We’ve had so much snow this winter it’s hard to find a place to pull over and shoot – every available spot has been piled high with snow by the town plows. Once those mountains of snow were gleaming and quite impressive, but now they're dirty, pocked by the sun, and tired looking. I kept driving, but nothing seemed worth the effort. Then something caught my eye as I drove by the town marina. At first I thought there were people out there, but why were they standing there at such regular intervals? Was it some kind of ‘art happening’ or a quirky commercial shoot?
One step from my vehicle into the biting wind, and they had my complete sympathy, whoever they were. Curiosity got the better of me, and I walked further, trying to keep in the shelter of the kiosks and ornamental trees, stopping just long enough to take these two photos. As you can see, they aren't people at all! Back home and warm, I asked my neighbor about them, and learned they are electric power sources for the boats in dock. But I prefer to think of them as sentinels, standing look-out for the return of spring. The second shot is of more slips to the right. No sentries there; I just liked the patterns the horizontals and verticals make.
