SKYWATCH FRIDAY – GEESE AND GULL AT TWILIGHT (Lake Erie)

One evening after the sun had set and the darkness was closing in fast, I noticed a high altitude jet trail catching the last of the light. I started to take some shots when I noticed a flock of geese crossing the sky, and waited with my camera until they were silhouetted against the trail. When I went to crop the photos, I discovered I’d caught a soaring gull, too.

Of all the many weather moods and cloud formations I see here on the lake, I think these near-abstractions are the ones I like best. They remind me a little of paintings by two of my favorite artists, Mark Rothko, and Canada's Otto Rogers. Rogers’ works are especially organic earth-and-sky looking.
