This past weekend we got a few more inches of snow. It was not the fluffy “liar snow” I wrote about recently, but wet, wind-driven pellets that left everything in its path coated with ragged ice. Once the storm broke, I decided to go out with my camera and go anywhere as long as I was outside.
We’ve had so much snow this winter it’s hard to find a place to pull over and shoot – every available spot has been piled high with snow by the town plows. Once those mountains of snow were gleaming and quite impressive, but now they're dirty, pocked by the sun, and tired looking. I kept driving, but nothing seemed worth the effort. Then something caught my eye as I drove by the town marina. At first I thought there were people out there, but why were they standing there at such regular intervals? Was it some kind of ‘art happening’ or a quirky commercial shoot?
One step from my vehicle into the biting wind, and they had my complete sympathy, whoever they were. Curiosity got the better of me, and I walked further, trying to keep in the shelter of the kiosks and ornamental trees, stopping just long enough to take these two photos. As you can see, they aren't people at all! Back home and warm, I asked my neighbor about them, and learned they are electric power sources for the boats in dock. But I prefer to think of them as sentinels, standing look-out for the return of spring. The second shot is of more slips to the right. No sentries there; I just liked the patterns the horizontals and verticals make.

I thought they were people too standing out there at 1st! And definitely look like sentinels.
It looks rather like a graveyard to me. I saw that "liar-snow" you're talking about. It's like tiny fake styrofoam balls, isn't it?

I just love that first picture Deborah. I too was fooled by the "people" standing out there. I clicked it large and saw that it was some sort of sentinel, as you said. Then the discovery of their true purpose emerge. Really a fool the eye moment.
AND, Poetikat's reference to graveyard is spot on.
Good name for those electric thingees... I like the idea of thinking of them as sentinels also!!!!! You NEED the sentinels to BEG for some spring for your area of the world. I cannot imagine that much snow!!!!!

Betsy
striking designs...indeed they are sentinels waiting for warmer weather and boats to light up.
Omigosh... My least favorite kind of snow are those pellets that feel as if someone's throwing gravel at your face when you try and walk in it. I swear they're leaving pock marks on my cheeks when they hit.
Your photos bely the nastiness of the icy snow that had just visited the area. It looks so calm and at ease with nature.
I love your read on the "sentinels"
I hope they see spring weather soon. Aren't we all just SO ready for it to arrive this year?
Great account of how you came to take these photos. It really drew me in.
Amazing! I thought they were people too at first glance. I just know it looks COLD! and I'm sure it feels the same way! Marvelous post, as always!
That late winter snow is the most vicious, I think. It hardens fast and stays put. One last opportunity to stay in and warm and cozy! You are an intrepid photographer.
I thought they were people too. I had to click the photo to enlarge it to see what they actually were. Very cool photo! I hope the snow starts to melt for you soon.
I thought they were people at first. wonderful find !
Brrr! You were brave to step out in that wind at the lake no less. I think bloggers are a very hardy sort of people, always looking for something new to share in spite of the weather. Interesting post.
Nice one. Aloha (Brrrr)
You are very adventurous! Interest provoking pics and post!
loved your version
How cool- I just had to keep looking at those sentinels- I was sure they were people!!
Great mirage; and great shot of said mirage. You had me fooled too until I read your post. I still like to think of them as sentinels.
You know the big, big powerline poles--the major carriers...I am sure there is a word for them but I don't know what it is. I always call them the Silent Sentinels. I have tried and tried to capture how they make me feel, but have yet to get a good photograph that portrays it. Anyway, I understand how you feel about these sentinels cause I go through that same feeling.
These are extraordinary snow pics! Thanks for sharing. The peace and calm come through...
Hugs, G
