smoke from a burnt match
candles flare against the night
one dark hour for earth
I don’t take night shots very often, but I love the synchronicity that the photo I took on my front porch (on the OSI site) just happened to end up being posted with the one I shot last night for Earth Hour, in support of a solution to our global energy needs.

As I read this I thought to myself "Why didn't I think of this for the prompt?" Well done. And yes, my lights were out for Earth Hour.
Love your picture..
But shouldn't we try to conserve energy all the time?
Thank you for your comment about the Ocean Conservancy cleanup in September.
Please join "The TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup". We are one of the largest conservation initiatives of the Vancouver Aquarium. What started in 1994 as a small beach cleanup conducted by a handful of Vancouver Aquarium employees has now grown into the second largest cleanup in the world.
During the last five years I have coordinated cleanups for our Lake Ontario shoreline in Guildwood.
Perhaps there was cleanup event in your area last year? Please check it out.

Let me know if I can of any help.

Our lights were out too. Andy, his 3 young sons (6,8,10) and I sat in candlelith and ate beautiful strawberries dipped in newly whipped cream and tried to take all the steps to get the strawberries from probably Mexico and the cream from who knows where, to our table. It was a fun and sobering experience, especially for them.
Thanks for this poem, the photo you posted on the OSI page, the prompt, everything--all delicious!
I really enjoyed both this photo and the on OSI and as well as both verses words there and here. My husband is Buddhist and I love the slight wisp of scented smoke from his candle when he meditates.
..that hour the lights went out_
to light up all lives_
the gentle thoughts & expressions
that i take away from ur posts always fight the darkness, any darkness,my darkness-
many thanks..
I wonder if the white house in washington dc was dark for earth hour?
Love the picture and poem.
I loved this; the beauty of the vigil and of the thoughts...
Love your words and the photo! Perfect! Always enjoy your Sunday Haiku!
Lovely OSI, and I love your night shot. Both at the OSI page and the one here.
Hi Deborah -- First, thank you for this nice (smokey) prompt. I have enjoyed reading the takes on it a whole lot.
Wasn't that wonderful, the one dark hour for earth! You were good with it with your poem, not too many write about the smoke from the match. The promt fits as if you had Earth Hour in mind when you asked for it.
"The TV" picked up on it pretty good, the networks that is. We don't observe that in Houston, it means a loss of revenue from energy sales. It wasn't in the papers nor on the local TVs and I didn't even know about it until this morning. We do observe Earth Day in April (22).
We were at a neighbrohood party last night in the, no one mentioned Earth Hour it at all.
Great OSI and photo! My lights were out for 20 minutes until 10 kids came in here (with my sons) and ruined it. There was no way I was going to be in a house with 10 teenage boys and no lights! I need to see what they are up to at all times. ;o)
Thanks for your comment on my Earth Hour post. I noted the link at the top of your sidebar.
Your poem was perfect with your beautiful candlelit photo!
I love this. I had my lights out for Earth Hour, too. It was a cool thing, and it got me thinking--like your poem.
Your porch is a place I'd love to be - it's warming and gorgeous. I've always been interested in Buddhism and have lately begun to re-look at it in a more 'frequent fashion'. Thanks for the prompt, for your lovely poem and the view of your porch.
Hi There, We're home from our trip to Serenity Falls. I'll post pictures tomorrow morning. It was a WONDERFUL place.
Since we were away from home, we couldn't participate in Earth Hour---but we try to do everything we can to help with global energy needs.
We may do it one evening this week---just to keep the need in our minds... It is fun to read by candlelight. SO relaxing!!!!
Sounds like you have had a good week.
Hugs,
Betsy
