SKYWATCH FRIDAY – Storm on the Michigan Side (Lake Erie)

Looking across the lake, I can always see the weather over parts of both Michigan and Ohio. The storm in the top photo, in the far west corner of the horizon, was raining down over some counties in Michigan. Further along to the east (bottom) it sky is still clear over Sandusky, Ohio. It looks like it’s rained here in Leamington, too—the breakwall parapet is wet and shining—but that’s just from waves splashing over.

SKYWATCH FRIDAY – Ferry Returning from Sandusky (Lake Erie)

I took these a few weeks ago, before the recent winds stripped off the last of the leaves. You can click to enlarge to see the ferry near the sweeping frainge. In case all the fans of weather phenomena are scratching their heads, frainge is a word I coined to replace the accepted term virga – which I never liked. I grant myself huge liberties with words, changing the ones I don’t care for, and inventing new ones for weather-related events I think should have their own term. (I also made up “spraysicles” in the previous post).

HELLO OHIO!

It never ceases to amaze me, how different the lake can look. It changes with all the usual larger rhythms - the seasons, day to day, hour to hour. But even moment to moment the light changes, clouds shift, precipitation sweeps across my view. We had a few stray flakes earlier this afternoon. Now it looks like all rain or snow is in Ohio. Which is it? I can't tell from here.

SKYWATCH FRIDAY – Fermi II (Lake Erie)

This photo (click to enlarge) was taken from the Erie north shore, looking across to the twin towers of the Fermi II nuclear power plant. Fermi II is located about halfway between Detroit, Michigan and Toledo, Ohio, in the city of Monroe (Frenchtown Charter Township) Michigan. The view constantly changes with the light and weather. Sometimes white feathery plumes, several times the height of these, arise. I would like to think of them as beautiful, but somehow I’m never quite able to.
