SKYWATCH FRIDAY – Ferry Returning from Sandusky (Lake Erie)

I took these a few weeks ago, before the recent winds stripped off the last of the leaves. You can click to enlarge to see the ferry near the sweeping frainge. In case all the fans of weather phenomena are scratching their heads, frainge is a word I coined to replace the accepted term virga – which I never liked. I grant myself huge liberties with words, changing the ones I don’t care for, and inventing new ones for weather-related events I think should have their own term. (I also made up “spraysicles” in the previous post).

Both are nice but I love the first one with its texture of clouds in shades of pink and blue. The tree silhouette in the foreground is well composed. Very lovely.

lol, you caught me... I was like "what an awesome capture of virga", and as I reading your post and was like... "FRAINGE?! What the heck is... Oh!!!" Making up weather words... funny. Beautiful regardless of what you call it. I like your "spraycicles" too! lol Perfect word for them!

Beautiful photos, I love the contrast in the first one. I like how you caught the rain in them, too.

Gorgeous shots and I like both your new words. Glad the sun has come out. Hope the birds are happily feasting again.

The light in those clouds is fantastic. Water, storms, and light make a good combo.

both are beautiful, but i'm quite partial to the first ones. i enjoy when bare tree limbs are photographed against the sky.

Deborah: Neat post and great photos. I'm glad you confused Dew with your newly coined word. I didn't even know the correct word.

I like the photos but I mostly like your words and your boldness in creating them. I shall have to try that myself someday!

Nice! Frainge or virga, I like the photo. Besides, language should be alive and growing, not frozen in time.

We drive by Sandusky sometimes on the way to visit the wren-laws. The ferry looks like more fun, but not very practical for our route. Rats!

It must make understanding what you write a bit difficult?

I like Frainge better. and spraysicles. I think this re-naming shows how often you look at sky and water and how much you love to. I love the photos, it makes me want to go out and take snaps of the river ( but I am homebound w/flu)

town nicknames
Re: shoetown (all the shoes are long gone except at one store that sells high end made in italy ladies shoes)

but there was.. a town... in Westchester (either near scardale or scarsdale itself (?) an old man told me he grew up there and the Life Saver candy factory was there. they mixed a different flavor every day and the sir would small of that flavor quite strongly. the lightest days were lemon and lime days, and the stinkiest day was butterum day (which happened about once a month) butterum life savers may taste ok he said, but he could never eat them because the air smelled like rotten eggs while they were being processed.

I think I may have to send you a copy of the book "Coined by Shakespeare" he made up words like Alligator and fortuneteller.

remember sniglets? (Rich Hall)

Cinemuck was my fave (the sticky stuff on the floor of the movie house)

word verifications on blogger can sometimes be fun.

These are beautiful. What you must see living on the water! I would be inspired to invent some new words, too.

Love skies with bits of pink, and the water one is fabulous! But a tad chilly.
