I'll bet there's still a fair number of people can fill in the missing lyrics, with "Route 66." It's been quite a while since I've been on a road trip, and every once in a while, I start to miss it. There's something about tossing a few necessities in your vehicle (maybe including a map or two) and the most important thing...picking out the music. Whether you have a specific destination in mind, or are heading out to seek whatever may find you, the road trip has been embedded in the North American zeitgeist for generations. One fantasy road trip I have not yet taken is to travel the old U.S. Route 66, celebrated in song, book, television, movies, and the personal stories of millions of peopl
e we'll never hear about. For now, I'll have to settle for riding shotgun vicariously with a local Windsor woman, photographer Sandi Wheaton, who is making the trip, and documenting it in a road blog. For those of you for whom this stirs something inside, here's the link to Sandi's BLOG. You can join her trip, already in progress (she started on Sat.19th) And for the rest of us who are, for now at least, staying put, at least we have the Eagles...Maybe you have a memory you can share, too.

PS: I always thought of them as the "hairy eagles" when they were in their heyday.
I love Route 66. It is my favorite piece of American nostalgia. We always try to fit in bits and pieces of it when we are traveling.

Hi Deb, I love to just get my toothbrush and a change of clothes and jump in the car and take a road-trip to anywhere. So much fun!!!! And since we have a Garmin GPS--we don't even need a map!!!!
I haven't been to Route 66---but I'd love to... There are so many places we want to see --especially out west. People keep sending us pictures of gorgeous waterfalls out there. One day--we just need to GO!!!!

We used to travel Rt 66 to California in the 50's and 60's, to see my mother's family. Four little kids, and no air conditioning. I remember the water bags hanging on the front of cars, and sidewinder tracks in the desert.
There are quite a few songs from 69-70 put me back in Oregon, instantly. Unlike trips with my parents, music was a part of our rambling when we were first married.
how fun, I wrote an article on Route 66 a few months back. We took part of it on our trip to Texas through New Mexico last Thanksgiving. Nostalgic!

Oh, yes, road music is an important part of any trip. I love that with an ipod I can take ALL my music with me and change it up as I drive.
Road trips open the mind and give it a chance to grow. My last trip last year was going through southern Utah to places like Zion, Bryce Canyon and Arches! Majestic and fantastic!
